Music shops are fading away

Bricks and mortar music shops seem to be fast fading from our towns and high streets. While guitar shops and independants are able to buck the trend it’s difficult for them stock electronic music gear, and almost impossible to compete with online stores on price. If we’re not careful we are going lose the opportunity for people to discover synthesizers and music gear simply because there’s no where they can go to see it. You can’t fall in love with a synth online – you have to handle it. You can’t be hooked into Eurorack modular by watching reels and tiktoks – you have to patch it.

There are synth shows like Superbooth, Bristronica and my own Synth East and these are excellent events for enthusiasts and the synth community, but they are few and far between and people don’t just happen to be passing in their lunch break.

If high-tech music shops are no longer viable what’s the alternative? Well, maybe I can invite you to a Synth Picnic….

More to come.
